THE COA

The Andorran Olympic Committee (COA) was created in 1971 and later recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1975, at which point it became part of the Olympic movement. The organisation was established with the aim of promoting and developing, at a national level, the fundamental principles upon which Olympism is based.

Modern Olympism is conceived as a philosophy of life — a way of living that combines sport, culture and education. The core mission of the Olympic movement is to place sport at the service of the

harmonious development of humanity, in order to build a peaceful society concerned with preserving human dignity and respect for fundamental human rights.

Members of the COA are committed to and bound by the provisions of the Olympic Charter.

Its activities must be guided by the pursuit of peace, respect for the environment, sports ethics, the fight against doping, and the promotion of gender equality in sport.

FUNCTIONS

  • To develop, promote and protect the Olympic movement in Andorra in accordance with the Olympic Charter, and to define and ensure compliance with ethical sports standards as outlined in it.
  • To consolidate the Andorran Olympic spirit by spreading the fundamental principles of Olympism, particularly through training and education programmes; to fight against all forms of discrimination and violence in sport; to help eradicate betting fraud; and, in collaboration with the Andorran Anti-Doping Agency (AGAD), to combat the use of substances and procedures banned by the World Anti-Doping Code. It must also encourage measures relating to athletes’ health and medical procedures. In general, the COA must ensure respect for the Olympic Charter in Andorra. The COA and its members must adhere to and respect the World Anti-Doping Code.
  • To promote unity within the Olympic and sporting movement among its members — including sports federations, associations, affiliated clubs and their license holders; to represent the Andorran Olympic and sports movement, especially in bodies that aim to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of sport or fulfil recognised social functions; to help resolve disputes within the sports community through mediation or arbitration; and, when necessary, to take legal action to defend the collective interests of the Olympic and sporting movement in accordance with Andorran law.
  • To carry out, on behalf of or with federations — while respecting their powers — all joint-interest activities to support the development of elite sport and sport for all, especially in areas such as athlete promotion in the social sphere, initial and ongoing training of managers, officials and coaches, as well as research, planning, documentation and communication.
